Garfunkel, the Galways and
Royal Scots among the attractions

Looking to retreat indoors as winter
sets on San Antonio? The beautiful
stages inside the historical theaters of
our community will be jumping with
excitement, offering a myriad of entertainment
from symphony, opera and
dance to classics from Broadway.
One of San Antonio’s most magical
theaters, the Majestic, is boasting quite
a lineup for the 2008 season. Grammyaward-
winning singer Art Garfunkel will
grace the stage on Jan. 12, celebrating
the recent release of his 12th solo
album, Some Enchanted Evening. He
has achieved success for decades,
beginning with Simon and Garfunkel,
and continued to thrive as a solo artist.
His latest album is a salute to some of
the 20th century’s greatest songwriters,
including Rodgers and Hammerstein,
Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Antonio Carlos
Jobim and George Gershwin.
Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot hits the
stage Jan. 22 through 27, with Tony-nominated
Lou Diamond Phillips wearing the
crown of King Arthur. Watch one of the greatest love stories of all time unfold in a kingdom of honor
and chivalry.
Then get ready as the longest-running show in Broadway history
returns to San Antonio, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The
Phantom of the Opera. Directed by Harold Prince, this seventime
Tony-Award-winning
musical will run Feb. 27 through
March 23. Be among the more
than 80 million people to revel
in this story of a masked figure
who lurks beneath the Paris
Opera House.
The San Antonio Symphony
unveils a blockbuster 2008
season. On Jan. 18 and 19, legendary
pianist Peter Serkin will
join conductor Larry Rachleff
at the Majestic Theatre in a
program of music spanning
two centuries, as Serkin performs
Stravinsky’s lively
Capriccio for Piano and
Orchestra, Bach’s immortal Keyboard Concerto No. 1 and
Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony.
British conductor Christopher Seaman will be joined by
pianist Joyce Yang on Feb. 1 and 2 at the Majestic. This concert
of Germanic and English treasures features Mendelssohn’s
evocative Fingal’s Cave Overture in conjunction with Yang’s
performance of Piano Concerto No. 24 by Mozart.
On Feb. 15 and 16, also at the Majestic, flautists Sir James
and Lady Jeanne Galway will engage audiences with the
beauty of classical music. For decades the legendary Sir
Galway has performed around the globe for enthusiastic
audiences. This concert will include American composer John
Corigliano’s colorful Pied
Piper Fantasy.
The Carver Community
Cultural Center has something
for every taste in the upcoming
season. On Jan. 19 the
MorganScott Ballet will dazzle
audiences with dance styles
that run the gamut from classical
to jazz. Edward Morgan
and Daniel Scott, who established
this ballet as a vehicle
for creativity, have maintained
a standard of excellence, no
matter the style.
The Langston Hughes
Project, Ask Your Mama: 12
Moods for Jazz, lands at the Carver on Feb. 15. Experience the
mood of the Harlem Renaissance in this 800-line suite of poems
illustrated by the spoken word and accompanied by a live
quartet and visual illustrations of Hughes' world through his collaborators
and contemporaries.
ARTS San Antonio presents the Royal Scots Dragoon
Guards on Feb. 17 at the Lila Cockrell Theatre. Few sights in the world are as majestic or sound as triumphant
as those of a world-class regimental
band. Don’t miss more than 90
musicians showcasing all of the pomp
and circumstance of great military
bands of the United Kingdom that have
been in existence for over 200 years.
The San Antonio Opera brings a touch
of humor to the stage with Elixir of Love
showing Jan. 25 through 27 at the Lila
Cockrell Theatre. Directed by legendary
Hollywood director and producer Garry
Marshall, with music by Gaetano
Donizetti and libretto by Felice Romani,
this opera sung in Italian will have English
supertitles projected above the stage.
Take the journey with a shy young man
without a dime to his name as he falls in
love with a rich and beautiful woman.Will

The hottest thing to hit the ice is coming
to San Antonio. The must-see
Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice
Tour takes over the Alamodome March
19 through 23. This is the only live fusion
of songs, dancing and non-stop, teamspirited
