Chamber Music For San Antonio
And The Hill Country

By Kenneth Freudigman

Camerata San Antonio is regularly praised by reviewers and audiences for its imaginative programming and energetic performances. Programs always include the unexpected -- a masterpiece by a little-known composer or a brand-new piece by a living composer, or even tango dancers.  The thread that ties them all together is the passion of the music and the performers.

Camerata SA was established by Kenneth Freudigman and Emily Watkins (principal cellist and assistant principal violist of the San Antonio Symphony) in 2003.

Camerata SA presents six concerts in San Antonio and four in Kerrville in the 2006-07 season, featuring musicians from the San Antonio Symphony and guest artists from around the country. Remaining concerts this season include:

Tango! Tango! Tango!
Nov. 5
Featuring works by famed tango composer Astor Piazzolla in dazzling arrangements for string quartet and piano trio. Three tangos will be interpreted by dancers Frank Huddleston and Kathleen Robertson. Violinist Annie Chalex Boyle, formerly of the Harrington String Quartet, brings her sultry sound to San Antonio for these performances.

Double Trouble
Jan. 14
A concert of music for double reeds -- oboe and English horn. Britten’s acerbic Phantasy Quartet for oboe and strings opens the performance and Francaix’s playful Quartet for English Horn and Strings closes the show. Featured guest artists are Brent Ross, assistant principal 0boe of the San Antonio Symphony and Stephanie Shapiro, English horn of the SAS.

The Camerata Recital
Feb. 25
Principal horn of the SAS, Jeff L. Garza, and pianist Vivienne Petkovich present a recital of horn music by Beethoven, Faure and Francaix.

Frederica von StadeAmericana
April 1
SAS Concertmaster, Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio, principal cellist Kenneth Freudigman, and guest concert pianist Aileen Chanco present an all-American concert. Piano trios by Ives and Beach are featured, as are duos by Foss and Paulus. You may even catch some Texas favorites in Paulus’ American Vignettes for cello and piano.

Big Strings
April 29
Sextets by Strauss and Brahms flank a newly discovered gem by Romantic composer Julius Rontgen in this concert featuring husband-and-wife violinists Ertan and Kim Torgul, guest violist Amadi Hummings, assistant principal cellist David Mollenauer and co-founders Kenneth Freudigman and Emily Watkins.

All concerts take place at 3 pm in the historic sanctuary of Travis Park United Methodist Church in downtown San Antonio, and most are previewed in Kerrville. Call 492-9519 for more information or go to www.cameratasa.org.
