NUTCRACKER SWEETS
An all-pastry event ... the uniqueness
of that alone makes it
stand out,” said one of the celebrated
chefs at last year’s Nutcracker Sweets,
the signature benefit event for the
Battered Women and Children’s Shelter
of Bexar County, a program of the Family
Violence Prevention Services, Inc.
(FVPS). “Not many events are just sweets.”
The extravaganza is set for Tuesday, Dec.
4, at 5:30 p.m. in The Club at Sonterra.
Admission offers you all the sweets you want
and,thankfully,vegetable and cheese trays
to even your palate. The evening also features
lively music, festive décor and an
extraordinary live auction with AM 550
KTSA’s Trey Ware as auctioneer.
The event’s silent auction is the place to
shop for one-of-a-kind "Insta Gift" baskets,
such as Aveda hair products with a salon
gift card or a little red wagon filled with
stuffed animals, as well as certificates for
dinners, portraits and theater productions.
“Every year, we are overjoyed at the
excellent assistance we receive,” says
Marta Peláez, FVPS president and CEO. “The chefs and event volunteers are very
busy people, and yet they give of themselves
to help victims of domestic violence.”
The holiday affair will feature some 20
award-winning chefs from San Antonio
and other cities who contribute their time,
talent and ingredients to prepare small
portions of their favorite desserts for guests.
Their support, along with that of presenting
sponsor Valero Energy Corporation and
other event donors, volunteers and an
enthusiastic crowd of 1,000 attendees, is
expected to raise $80,000. Funds raised will
help the Shelter continue to provide safe
shelter, counseling, case management
and legal advocacy for women and their
children who have suffered abuse.
