t’s time to pull up a lawn chair and join the rollicking fun at
the Great American Trailer Park Musical, the latest off-
Broadway comedy to grace the stage at San Antonio’s Cameo
Theatre. The show, which made its New York debut in 2005,
began touring the United States in September. The San Antonio
show opens Nov. 8.
As you take your seats, you’ll be welcomed into the world of
Armadillo Acres, the most exclusive manufactured housing subdivision
in North Florida. OK, it’s really a seedy trailer park. An
unlikely setting for a musical — but it works.
Written by sketch comedy writer and improv actor Betsy
Kelso, the show unabashedly takes on such issues as love triangles,
infidelity, teen pregnancy, spray cheese snack recipes and
bad perms — all with the heart and soul of a Jerry Springer/Sally
Jesse Raphael talk show.
But rather than mock all the colorful characters and their
hare-brained antics, the musical — in spite of its wickedly clever
one-liners and lyrics — generously embraces them and draws
you into this delightfully crazy group of down home folks. It’s
light and cheeky, but filled with all kinds of stuff you can sink your
teeth into … if you can stop laughing.
This trailer trash is definitely full of treasures.
